Organic Acids Testing
Organic acids testing is an important component of a thorough functional workup for any patient with psychiatric or neurologic complaints. It is one of the broadest tools we have, capturing a wide range of biological processes from a single urine sample. Organic acids testing reveals what is happening at the cellular level.
Organic Acids Testing
Organic acids are the metabolic byproducts of chemical reactions taking place in the body. They are produced as your body converts food into energy, manufactures neurotransmitters, and processes toxins. The microbes living inside your gut produce these compounds as well.
Organic Acids Testing (OAT) provides a detailed picture of cellular metabolism. It allows us to evaluate patterns of mitochondrial energy production, nutrient sufficiency, oxidative stress, detoxification capacity, and gut microbial balance.
Mitochondria are tiny workhorses, often referred to as “the powerhouse of the cell.” They take in nutrients from food and convert them into usable energy. Markers in the OAT test will give us insight into how efficiently your body converts carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy.
The brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in the body. When energy production is strained, it can contribute to mental fatigue, poor concentration, low motivation, and reduced stress tolerance. In some individuals, impaired energy metabolism is associated with depressive symptoms or executive dysfunction.
Other markers provide insight into how well specific vitamins and minerals are being utilized. Nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, and certain amino acids are required for the production and regulation of neurotransmitters.
Patterns with organic acids can reveal functional insufficiency states, conditions in which a nutrient is present but is not being properly processed at the cellular level to support normal biochemical processes. In these cases, standard blood tests may appear normal because they measure circulating levels rather than how effectively nutrients are working inside cells. Identifying functional insufficiency or deficiency states could help explain and precisely treat mental and physical symptoms.
Certain organic acids are produced directly by gut microbes. The gut and brain constantly communicate through bidirectional networks. Imbalances in gut microbial activity may influence inflammation, neurotransmitter signaling, and stress responses. These tests are particularly useful for identifying overgrowth of Clostridium or Candida species, which can have tremendous implications for mental health.
When to Consider Organic Acids Testing
Organic acids testing can be especially informative for individuals managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, chronic fatigue, or autoimmune disorders. It is also worth considering for anyone with longstanding gut issues or a history of antibiotic use.
How It Works
Organic acids are measured from urine samples. Once your provider orders your kit, DHA Labs will contact you to request payment information. This test is not covered by insurance.
The full Organic Acids Test costs $352. The microbial OAT is a more focused version that evaluates organic acids produced specifically by gut organisms, such as yeast and certain bacteria. The Microbial Organic Acids Test (MOAT) is $278.00. Depending on the discussion you’ve had with your provider and your specific symptom pattern, a Microbial OAT may be appropriate in some cases. The complete OAT test measures over 75 unique metabolic compounds, while the MOAT test only looks at 21 markers.
